Welcome!
The Southwest Division of the American Association of Geographers (SWAAG) serves as the regional division of the esteemed American Association of Geographers (AAG) exclusively catering to AAG members who reside in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Established in 1949, SWAAG is committed to advancing the field of geography through rigorous professional investigations. Our primary mission encompasses promoting the practical utilization of geographic discoveries in the realms of education, government, and business, while concurrently bolstering the overall public perception of geography. To achieve these goals, we orchestrate an annual academic conference (traditionally held in October or November), distribute a yearly newsletter, and publish to a peer-reviewed journal renowned as "The Southwestern Geographer." The Division also recognizes students exemplary achievements in research by extending support through Student Competitions (e.g., paper and poster awards) and through our highly anticipated Geography Bowl competition.
